Hartford Information

Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and has a population of about 130,000 residents and a metropolitan population of about 1,190,000, making it the largest metro area in the state and the 45th largest in the country.

Hartford was a major manufacturing and publishing city in the nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century. After years of relative stagnation, Hartford has begun to attract new development such as a new convention center and hotel, a recently completed science center, the reclaimed riverfront, and an infusion of residential and commercial ventures. It is home to the country's oldest public art museum (Wadsworth Atheneum), the oldest public park (Bushnell Park), the oldest continuously published newspaper (The Hartford Courant), and the second-oldest secondary school (Hartford Public).

In 2004, the metropolitan area ranked second per capita for economic activity. Hartford generates more economic activity than sixteen U.S. states and is 32nd of 318 metropolitan areas in total economic production.

Hartford, nicknamed “Insurance Capital of the World”, is home to many of the world’s insurance company headquarters. Insurance remains the region’s major industry. Companies such as Travelers, Aetna, The Hartford, The Phoenix Companies, Inc. and Hartford Steam Boiler are based in the city.
